IT WAS LIKE I WOKE UP, from the moment I got off the plane, over-tired and jetlagged, I was more awake than I’ve ever been. Momo, the head of Oranim, greeted us by saying, “Welcome home!” And I was, for the first time, I was home. The land that I was first told about in Hebrew School; the stories of the old testament used to conjure up images in my head of endlessly expansive deserts and the dusty, ever-trodding feet of my ancestors, who walked and walked for 40 years until finally they reached the Promised Land. I have been a wanderer too; in the vast desert of all that stretches out before me, I have been a nomad lost within myself. Like Moses, I was born into exile, and saved by the drifting waters. Unlike Moses, I was able to see Israel with my own eyes and walk the land like a prodigal daughter returned.
